Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

One of the greatest heroes in American history is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King grew up in the segregated South where he experienced a lot of racial humiliation. His experiences made him very depressed because he could not believe that God would allow his people to go through such pain. At one point in his young life, he tried to jump out a second story window because he was so depressed. Dr. King looked up to his father, and his father shared with him that with a good education he could become a strong man. At the age of fifteen, he was supposed to start his junior year of high school. However, he was able to take a college entrance exam, and he passed which made him eligible to attend Morehouse College. He graduated from Morehouse. Then, went on to a Seminary College where he graduated and went on to work on his Ph.D. from Boston University.

I look up to Dr. King because he took his education seriously and saw how powerful it made him. It was his faith that pushed him to fight for equal rights. He was not looking to be a political leader. He believed that if our government promised democracy for everyone, it should be for everyone. He was an ordinary man that saw people being treated unfairly his whole life. It was his faith and knowledge that empowered him to go out and try to change not only the South, but the whole United States.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is a hero to me because he wanted equality for all people. He wanted black people to have the right to vote and be able to sit wherever they wanted to, and drink water from any water fountain they were near. He wanted equality for all people. It was hard, but he led marches and gave speeches. Two of his famous speeches were the “I have a Dream,” speech and the “Over the Mountain Top,” speech. He talked about how blacks should be able to do what white people could and to be judged on their character not their skin color.

In conclusion, I will leave you with these words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” I think it is sad to hear that in the past people were treated so horribly and only because of their skin color or their religious belief. If I were alive back then, it would have been really hard for me to keep quiet knowing that I could not speak up for what I thought was right. We have come a long way and a lot of people sacrificed their lives for freedom. We still have a lot of work to be done because Dr. King said freedom for everyone and right now we still have racial tension and religious wars going on, so his march continues on.
